Manila vendor in viral shooting dies

A vendor whose shooting was caught on a closed-circuit television footage that went viral died on Tuesday night after undergoing surgery at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).

Based on the Facebook account of the victim’s sister, Sheryl Paregas, it was learned that Samson Bautista expired at 9 p.m. after doctors removed the bullet that was lodged in his neck.

Bautista was first admitted at the Gat. Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center (GABMMC) after he was shot on 18 February by suspect Alexander Ogdamina, alias “Kalbo,” 36, a resident of Gasangan Compound in Baseco, Port Area, Manila.

The crime, which was caught on camera, went viral that, within 24 hours, operatives of the Manila Police District (MPD)-Special Mayor’s Reaction Team, led by P/Major Rizalino Ibay, tracked the suspect at his hiding place and arrested him.

Bautista’s family hoped he would survive his injuries and be sent home in due time. However, his body proved too frail to survive the operation.

It was learned from the MPD-Homicide section that Bautista’s death certificate is all that is needed to revise the charges against the suspect to murder from homicide, which was earlier submitted to the City Prosecutor’s Office.

After learning of the death, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso called on Manileños to offer prayers and their support for the family of the victim.
