A total of 820 inmates of the Manila City Jail received diplomas to signify the completion of their studies under the Alternative Learning School (ALS) system.

This is part of the reformation program of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology that promotes education among inmates or so-called persons deprived of liberty (PDL).

The ALS national accreditation and equivalency examination is administered by the Department of Education (DepEd).

The exam is meant to test the readiness of PDL to enroll in high school and college courses.

Once they pass the exam, they will be accredited by the DepEd and considered graduates.

This year’s graduates, the fourth batch of ALS students, count as among the highest number of graduates ever.

In 2018, the number of PDL graduates reached a high of 600.
