Inmates turn coconut shells into decorative coinbaks

Persons deprived of liberty much known as “inmates” find it hard to earn money for themselves and their families, obviously because they are behind bars. They lack of income to fulfill their basic needs while on incarceration.

But with a good heart, an idea came out in 2015 from Jail Chief Inspector John Conrad Marcelino L. Basilio, who thought that they also have the right to livelihood, to be given privilege and opportunities for them to give welfare and their families a well-being.

An innovative idea was then introduced to them which became the start of their livelihood program. From the direct supervision of JO1 Gallibu, they make use of recycled materials. At first, they make coinbanks out of coconut shell, undergone some process of drying and cleaning before they started painting, which they called COCO Coinbank. They were able to make different designs through their own creativity. They have Anime characters such as One Piece, Naruto, Mickey Mouse, etc. And with further innovation, they were able to create another design. They have Lamp Shades, Ashtray, “Bunot”, Jewelry Box, Sandok, and many more. These creations were being sold to the service providers- different religious groups, who were visiting the jail.

The aim of these livelihood program is not just to give welfare but to give empowerment to their skills while in prison, to reduce or totally avoid recidivism and poverty once released. The challenge is that their in-charge would have to make them realize that what they were doing is not just for them to rehabilitate but to prepare them for what they were about to face outside.

For now, selling of their products continuous in different Trade Fairs and Bazaars, with the help of Likhang Munti. They allotted portion of their sales as additional capital.
