Families living along Laguna de Bay and other flood-prone areas in Muntinlupa were evacuated as the city braced for heavy rains and strong winds brought about by Typhoon Quinta on October 26.

Muntinlupa City Department of Disaster Resilience and Management recorded 259 families or at least 1,030 individuals in various evacuation centers in Brgy. Buli, Brgy. Cupang, Brgy. Alabang, Brgy. Bayanan, and Brgy. Poblacion. As of 8 a.m. of Oct. 26, MCDDRM identified five flooded areas in the city: Levis Compound in Tunasan; Espeleta Pantalan, Rizal St-Aplaya and Quezon-Aplaya in Poblacion; and Aplaya area in Buli.

The local Rescue Unit, City Security Office, and Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Teams have rescued families from these low-lying areas including the Espeleta-Pantalan, Rizal - Aplaya and Quezon – Aplaya in Poblacion.

Families staying in evacuation centers were given relief goods and non-food assistance through the Social Service Department.

In Muntinlupa Elementary School, the medical team of Brgy. Poblacion Health Center has provided check-up and medicines to the evacuees giving priority to children, persons with disability, pregnant women, and elderly. A breastfeeding station was also installed in the evacuation center to serve nursing mothers.

Further, the City Health Office has issued an advisory urging residents to avoid wading in flood waters or use proper protection such as boots and gloves to prevent being infected with leptospirosis.

CHO reminds the public that leptospirosis can be acquired through contact with water or soil that has been contaminated with the urine of an infected animal.

Mayor Jaime Fresnedi suspended classes in Muntinlupa for all levels, both public and private, on October 26 after Metro Manila was placed under storm Signal No. 2.

MCDRRMD urged the public to continually monitor advisories from PAG-ASA and the local government.

Recently, the local disaster response department installed early warning system across the city to inform communities in a timely manner about imminent threats such as typhoons, severe flooding, and earthquakes, among others.

Multiple sirens were signaled through the early warning system to inform communities of PAG-ASA’s weather update on tropical cyclone wind signal warnings in Metro Manila.

Typhoon Quinta will likely exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Tuesday afternoon.
