Muntinlupa prepares for tropical storm 'Quinta'
As a pre-emptive measure ahead of Severe Tropical Storm Quinta’s landfall in Luzon, Mayor Jaime Fresnedi has ordered the city and barangay risk reduction and management teams to be put on red-alert and to stand by for possible evacuation of communities in low-lying areas.
Fresnedi called for a virtual meeting of city department heads and barangay response teams to discuss prepositioning of emergency response resources and equipment such as rescue boats, generators, emergency vehicles, search and rescue equipment, among others.
The local exec also ordered the preparation of evacuation centers, including repacking of relief goods, and pre-emptive evacuation of vulnerable communities along dangerous coastal areas if necessary.
Billboards in the city were rolled up ahead of Quinta’s landfall while construction sites were inspected to ensure safety precautions on “cranes” and “construction booms.”
As of October 25, 12:20PM, the Muntinlupa City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (MCDRRMD) recorded normal water level in Laguna de Bay at 1.40 meters. The warning level is from 4.5 to 6.75 meters and above.
MCDRRMD urged the public to be vigilant and monitor advisories from PAG-ASA and the local government.
Recently, the local disaster response department installed early warning system across the city to inform communities in a timely manner about imminent threats such as typhoons, severe flooding, and earthquakes, among others.
A siren was signaled at 8:00AM, October 25 through the early warning system to inform communities that PAG-ASA raised a tropical cyclone wind signal warning (Signal No. 1) in Metro Manila.
Public Information Officer Tez Navarro said the local government will also strictly implement social distancing measures in evacuation centers to prevent possible infections as the city braces for the impact of Tropical Storm Quinta.
In PAG-ASA’s weather bulletin issued at 11:00AM, October 25, Severe Tropical Storm Quinta has been forecasted to continue moving westward until its landfall over the Catanduanes-Albay-Sorsogon area this afternoon and evening. STS Quinta is also expected to traverse the Southern Luzon area on Monday.
