Moralde to serve as playing coach of Muntinlupa Cagers
Dave Moralde will become the latest playing coach in the MPBL — at least on an interim basis.
The hardworking guard will temporarily take over the head coaching post of the Muntinlupa Cagers, while continuing to shore the back court of the former championship contender which has struggled big time in the ongoing Lakan Season.
A highly-placed source told FOX Sports PH that Ritchie Melencio, who could only lead the Cagers to three wins out of 11 games in the ongoing tournament, has stepped down from his post, leaving the team without a head coach.
Muntinlupa management, the source added, had decided to install Moralde as interim mentor for the time being beginning the team’s home game on Friday.
“Muntinlupa wanted somebody who’s associated with our fans, and Dave Moralde is a good fit,” said the source who requested anonymity. “He’s well-loved by our fans and we’re hoping he could come up with a good impression.”
Over the past few months, Moralde battled injuries and returned just recently, but this time, he’ll be playing a bigger role.
Moralde will become the second playing coach in league history after Jay Sierra, who played and coached at the same time for the Bataan Risers, then known as the Defenders, in the inaugural staging of the fastest growing regional amateur basketball league put up by Senator Manny Pacquiao with PBA legend and former MVP Kenneth Duremdes serving as commissioner.
